CATHERINE SCHECHTER

Catherine Schechter is an artist and educator living in North Vancouver. Catherine has retired from classroom teaching but continues to work with Artists For Kids as an art teacher. She moved from Sarnia, Ontario to Winnipeg, Manitoba at a young age, where the family cottage in the Whiteshell fostered her love of nature and has inspired her landscape work. The family moved to Sicily and to London England during her father’s career, exposing her to the art and architecture of Europe. Visiting art museums is a life-long passion.

Catherine’s current style is most influenced by Gordon Smith. It tends to be layered, detailed and gestural. It deals with memory, nature, the human figure and the search for permanence. She dedicates time to life drawing and her work as an artist in Linda Arkelian’s Summer Ballet Intensive at SFU Woodward’s has challenged her to respond to the fluid beauty of dancers in motion. “The object of art is not to reproduce reality, but to create a reality of the same intensity.” - Alberto Giacometti
