DENISE CHRISTENSEN

I find inspiration in the details of life rather than in grand sweeping gestures and backdrops. I look for an element of visual intrigue, and from there explore the space between abstraction and representation. In previous works I have focussed on close-ups of fruit and flowers to produce bold compositions in oil on canvas. Recently, I’ve turned to landscape and am now delving into a whole new array of details found in forests, beaches, rivers and streams.

For me being an artist means living in a state of perpetual curiosity and open-mindedness.

It is a way of seeing the world as if for the first time as a child might. Sometimes making art feels like an impossible task I have set for myself – like a dog chasing its tail – never to attain what is essentially unattainable. It’s the endless seeking of the intangible; of the thing you only imagined in your mind..

Denise Christensen is a graduate of Alberta College of Art (now Alberta University of the Arts). She is a long-term resident of BC and has exhibited and sold work in numerous boutiques and galleries throughout BC. She joined the Welch Street Studios at the beginning of 2026.
