About

Diane Zilka

Portrait, figure, still life, or landscape, my work always begins with drawing from life.

After studying graphic design and illustration at Sheridan College, I went on to work as a sign writer and then as a custom picture framer, a trade that sharpened my eye for composition, proportion and presentation.

I often work outdoors, mostly in charcoal and conte, mediums that I love for their softness and immediacy. Life drawing has always been the foundation of my art practice, and I approach landscapes the way I would a sitter, looking for gesture, and the movement of light across a form. The ocean, the trees, and the clouds shift like a model, so I work quickly, trying to keep each drawing loose and spontaneous.
